There's no compelling reason for me to pay for Word/Office. I'm an average user, much like Josh. I've been using OpenOffice for the last year without significant incident. Every once in awhile, there's a little something. And the Calc module has problems saving over itself every once in awhile...so it's important to keep an eye on that. I'm also intending to look at Google's new-acquired StarOffice, which is supposed to be good.

For the most part, I find Microsoft products to be kludgy and bloated. Yes, they do everything for you...but they are overpriced, and underresponsive to customer feedback. I believe I've paid for my last MS product (Outlook 2003...purchased last week...because 2007 sucks beyond belief).

It looks like Word is unanimously more popular with you guys, but it's caused me more pain than any other word processor. It does attempt to recover documents and there has been times where it has for me, but more often than not the "recovery" is a bunch of useless symbols.

Maybe I just need the newest version, but being that Office goes for $300-$600 I may just stick with OpenOffice, which hasn't given me any problems at all.

Anyone know how I can get the newest version of Word without having to pay for the entire Office pack?

ermm...to be totally honest, I think I'll stick with microsoft word. I'm sorry for your pains however, the behaviour of word was rather strange, considering you were unable to obtain your work after it'd crash. Bearing in mind microsoft word makes a backup copy or shadow copy of your document while your writing it til the moment you select save and it basically uses that file to overwrite your original document. That's one of the reasons why word is able to restore your original backup file if it crashes out. But that didn't happen for you. Anyway. enjoy your openoffice, I remember when I was at university and people there were trying to promote it...not for me, I'll say.

Hi Josh, sorry to hear that too.

Like Chris, I've got OpenOffice installed, but still use Microsoft Office most of the time. I like the idea of OpenOffice and want to support them, but it's not quite there yet (it's close though).

Another thing in favour of Microsoft Office (for me) is the Visual Basic For Applications underlying it. Since I teach VBA, I know it pretty well and I can get Office to do almost anything for me.

One tip I tell my IT students: Save often! I hit Ctrl+S two or three times a minute - I don't even know I'm doing it any more. Sounds like you had more serious problems if the entire document is gone, so this may not have helped, but it's worth repeating anyway.

I'm probably still venting, but I'm still sticking with OpenOffice. I've used it quite a bit and never had the slightest problem.

Sorry to hear that, Josh.

I like OpenOffice and have a copy of it, but I still use Office 2007 for just about everything. I haven't had those kind of problems.

Anyway, hope that you love OO!
