Why Positivity and Optimism are Crucial in your Online Business
December 16th, 2011 | 20 comments
It has now been over 7 years since I started my very first website, while stationed in Germany serving in the Army. I WISH that I had an audio clip of all of the people, especially back then, who told me that this “internet stuff” was a waste of time… people literally laughed at me back then. As I sit here crunching numbers for the upcoming tax season, I’m reminded of these people. They certainly aren’t laughing now that I’ve created a 6-figure business online!
However, there were many times when I allowed those people to get to me… I allowed their words to cause doubt and worry. I wondered if I was going down the path to wealth or the path to failure. And I think, what if I would have just listened to them and believed them? Luckily, I’m very stubborn when I truly believe in something and I truly believed that there was loads of huge opportunities online. I was right and I’ve made alot of money because of that stubbornness!
But it also made me realize, there are probably thousands of people in that same position right now! You may be one of them. Although I still feel like my business has more potential than success, I do live a very comfortable live. So I’d like to give you some advice if you happen to be in that situation (making little to no money online…getting negativity from others) and that is this:
- If you have little to no money coming from your online ventures, gain some type of employment so you can pay the bills while learning! This is important. I’ve heard from many people over the years who have loads of potential and tell me they “must” make this work. It will be extremely difficult to deal with negativity and failure, which WILL happen, if you and your family’s livelihood is on the line. Having a day job may slow your business growth, but it will provide that needed mental and financial stability.
- I promise you this: What will determine whether you become highly successful in the Internet Marketing space or not will be how well you react to this criticism and also how well you react to failure! I failed many times before I succeeded and I STILL have projects that fail. Failure is a part of life and business. Stay positive and optimistic. If you can do that, I don’t care how intelligent or unintelligent you are (I wouldn’t even be able to spell that word without spell check)
you can and most likely will be successful at some point!
And if you’re doing well with your online business, this still applies. I’m a very optimistic person in general, but even I occasionally get caught up with negativity when a product/service doesn’t take off like I had hoped. But I always “regroup,” re-evaluate, look at the positives and figure out how to get it to where I want it. And that positive attitude and optimism goes a long, long way!

Josh the post I agree with totally, but it’s the picture that really got me! There are mornings when that is how I look!

Good advice. I am nowhere near where I want to be but I know the only way to fail is to give up. Some successes, plenty of failures but you learn more from your mistakes I think. Forget the push button riches and realize if this was as easy as many gurus say everyone would be doing it. You have to stay optimistic and be realistic and keep applying what you learn to make it in this business.

Your right Josh! Thanks for this post. I know the exact feeling.

Josh,
The timing of this post is spot on.
We all have negative thoughts thru out the year, but year end seems to be the time they creep in a little deeper than usual.
Thansk for thre positive post.

Thanks Josh, this was a timely post for me because as a mature-aged newbie, I was starting to have doubts about being able to improve on my first website which is pretty basic.
I can relate to what you went through in your early days.
My wife thinks I’m wasting my time “playing” with the computer and most friends my age can’t grasp the concept of internet marketing.
But like you, I’m stubborn when it comes to believing in something.
So, despite my lack of technical ability, I’m going to press on with setting up an Amazon site as my next venture.
By the way, I liked the Bauern Fruhstuck recipe on your Germany site.
Cheers from sunny South Australia, Leon.

Right on Josh!
Having a day job lets you pay those bills while you’re learning. For most of us, there is no other way around it. It’s harder to do it that way, but you do what you gotta do! Pretty much like going to work during the day, then attending classes at night – anybody remember those days?
Like you say, you have to be stubborn for success and stay optimistic at the same time – not always an easy road to travel. In the long run though, the payoff will be worth the sacrifices.
Thanks for the encouraging words,

Josh, nice post. I sometimes get discouraged because I don’t see much in the way of financial gain right now. I keep forgetting that it’s a long process and success doesn’t happen overnight, despite what most internet marketers would like you to believe.
Keep up the great work!

Josh, what a great post. While I am still struggling to get where I want to be on the Internet. I certainly agree that a good positive attitude is necessary.
On of my favorite saying is “If you believe you can or you believe you can’t, you are right.” I think that is so true.
Thanks again for reminded me and have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It can be easy to get discouraged when you face obstacles with your online business. This includes temporary setbacks.
When Google did it’s Panda updates this year, a lot of people felt completely devastated. I suffered a setback on a couple of my websites. Of course it is disappointing!
I think what really helped me was keeping the right mindset ~ much like what you are talking about. Knowing what needs to be done and then just continuing to do it without allowing all the negativity to get you down really brings the end results you are after.
Hope you have a lovely Christmas Josh!
Blessings,
Angie

Yeah, if you are just getting started with this stuff, you might be disappointed at first, but you have to remember, you are starting a business. The entry costs can be minimal, but there is still a learning curve, and everyone must find their own way in the end – - cookie cutter solutions generally don’t work out all that well.
Take pride in what you do, strive to always provide value no matter what business model you choose, and embrace learning new things and eventually you’ll find your “thing”. A positive outlook helps you enjoy the journey and keep moving forward towards your goals.

Thank you for those encouraging words Josh. I am one who needs the reassurance.
Keep up the good work,

The old saying still applies: the best way of making money online is at your dayjob
And when IM guru’s start stressing on motivation and less on IMtips, then most likely the IMtips are not that good working that it needs a lot of motivation to stick to it. Or vice versa, if you like the optimistic approach

Really good advice, Josh!
Nowadays I’m not on the point I want, so some days it is very hard to deal with negativity from friends and family and learn from my failures. But I try to keep a positive attitude as I know what I want is possible.

It’s true that failure are sometimes hard to digest…especially when you spent time creating a product, and it doesn’t sell like you expected.
What I found the more difficult is choosing between: forget the failure, or improve and see if it can be turned into a success.

Well said Josh. I heard a very wise man say once that successful people aren’t standing on a mountain of successes, they are standing on a mountain of failures.

Dogged persistence with good training and support gets the job done.
When the money starts to come, then outsource, relax and enjoy a little more.
Failure is the foundation of success

Hey Josh,
Optimism is key. My favorite saying…
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face…You must do the thing you think you cannot do” Eleanor Roosevelt
Fear is part of the problem. This helps

Internet marketing does seem to me to be fickle, I agree that it is a lot of hard work and patience but to some degree, in my experience, some of the successes that I have had and seen is just being at the right place at the right time. Which i suppose means i’m agreeing with you completely, in the sense that you need to keep up the hard work and stay positive till all the different points line up.

Hey Josh,
Lots of wise thoughts here my man.
Not only I have been dealing with rejection in the past, it is also hard to understand that you need to spend money in order to make money online.
Once you understand this and start to apply yourself to the right mindset, taking action and making progress every day, it all suddenly changes and then you can look back with a smile.
That’s why perseveration is key, something that unfortunately not everyone has.
