The highest performing ad unit for me and many others has always been the large rectangle directly below a post title. The large rectangle is good for small niche sites, but it does take away from the users experience in my opinion. That's why I only do it on sites that I don't expect regular visitors and rely solely on organic traffic. The tower unit doesn't detract from the user experience nearly as much, but I don't use it and have never tested it so I'm not sure how it performs.
