Why New Internet Marketers Fail

why internet marketers failOne of my favorite quotes of all time is:

“Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls aren’t there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show us how badly we want things…the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough!”

– Randy Pausch

I’ve had it posted toward the bottom of this blog for a long while… I have it posted very clearly at the top of my Internet Marketing Forum and I mention it every chance I get, for good reason.

It carries what I believe to be one of the most important and meaningful lessons anyone can learn in business and life in general. Those “brick walls” are failure and we all fail from time to time.

For me, when applying it to my online business it serves as a reminder that not all sites, products and even blog posts are going to be a success. It reminds me that it’s ok when something I do doesn’t turn out to be as good as I had hoped… or even when something just completely FAILS!

I see this as the #1 reason so many people give up on their Internet Marketing Business. They spend alot of time and often alot of money in learning. They finally take action and they make little to no money. They hit a wall, lose confidence and quit. But in reality they didn’t fail, they just learned a lesson. Doing THAT didn’t make them any money, so they now know one way NOT to do it.

Another one of my favorite quotes is:

Failure defeats losers. Failure inspires winners. – Robert T. Kiyosaki

That’s a quote I often think about when I come across a “wall.” Is this failure going to defeat me or inspire me? So when you’re faced with a wall, will it inspire you or defeat you? I know what it will do for me!

Josh, sometimes I take issue with these motivational guys. As you mentioned, if a person tries and finds out they just don’t like it, does that make them a failure? No, they discovered something they didn’t like.

I tried playing ping-pong, I was OK at it, but I didn’t like it, does this make me a failure? No, I just didn’t like it, simple as that. “Failure defeats losers” this is just to close to the equation “Failure = Loser” maybe a better way to put it “Failure helps you discover your winning direction”

    Josh,
I’ve got to remember your quote by Kiyosaki. Great quote!
Your post reminds me of the story about Edison inventing the light bulb. He was asked why he didn’t quite after having 999 ideas for it that failed (or something like that). His reply was that he didn’t fail 999 times, he simply learned 999 ways that didn’t work!
And then he kept trying! As a rule of thumb, only those that keep trying will succeed, for very, very few are lucky enough to succeed on the first try.

    Hey Josh,

I have failed with many many projects but I just keep plugging away, I know one day it will all come good!

There always has to be some barrier to entry. It’s about dedication with Internet marketing and unless you’re willing to work at it, you’re not going to make money!

Maybe they fail to implement websites that are in their areas of passion and expertise?

For a first project I think you are doomed to failure unless you do this.

“It’s better to try and fail rather than fail of not having tried.” I forgot who said that line but its something to ponder about. Whenever i lose heart when attempting to do something, i’d start thinking i will never know if i can succeed on it if i will stop trying.

Those are two great quotes. Thanks for sharing.

Some folks like John Maxwell also talk about failing faster. More and more, I think that is what I am finding this a good approach in my experience doing IM. Do and if it doesn’t work out, review and learn from the experience. It’s a faster path of growth than holding back and not getting anywhere.
