Manual comment spam is getting worse these days. These guys legitimately find your blog, and they normally aren't using software etc., but it's still spam. If it's iffy I normally just delete their link altogether. I mean, if the comment doesn't even mention the topic of the post, they normally don't deserve a link.

Another good reason to nofollow those who don't regularly contribute is to prevent linking to bad neighborhoods.

Yeah, I am using the dofollow plugin. I'll probably switch to this one. It just makes more sense.

I'm fairly new to blogging and some spam has got past me a few times. I got a comment a few weeks ago that said, "I really enjoyed reading your post . I didn't understand everything, but I'll have to read up on it.

I couldn't figure out what was so hard to understand, but it seemed legit to me so I approved it. A few days ago, I got the exact same comment for another post. That's when I realized the first comment was spam. So for the last 3 weeks, I've been giving some spammer a free link. It makes a good case for using the plugin you are using.

Brent, I guess you're using the dofollow plugin then? It's a great plugin and you won't leak too much PR if you have enough internal links on each page but I thought I'd just play it on the safe side and nofollow one-time commenters and reward those of you who continually contribute.

Great plugin. I may install it myself. I'm using one that automatically strips the nofollow out of every post. But I like this one a lot better.
